In a game that went down to the wire, Central (8-1, 4-0) defeated Scotlandville (5-3, 3-1) last Friday night to garner at least a share of their 5th straight district championship.
It was not a good feeling for the Wildcats to be down 13-0 and to have only 39 yards total offense at halftime. Halftime adjustments are what quality football teams are all about and Central came out in the third quarter with a determination to run the ball up the middle and take advantage of Scotlandville’s lack of depth. It worked to perfection as Central scored 14 unanswered in the third and exchanged scores with the hornets in the fourth. The difference in the final score was a missed extra point by Scotlandville in the 2nd quarter.
Dontrell Hilliard paced Scotlandville with194 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Hornets quarterback Darion Williams was 12 of 21 for 113 yards.
Central was shut down in the first half by a Scotlandville defense that was obviously coached up on what Central liked to do. Speed sweeps, screens and the read option just didn’t work.
Lamonte Juneau was big in the win with 17 carries for 96 yards and three touchdowns. On a night when Central had just enough offense to win the game, quarterback Brett Courville was 6 for 13 passing for 53 yards and 58 yards rushing. Passing was a missing piece of the game for Central, with only Triplett (5 for 42) and Myer (1 for 11) having receptions.
Defensively, Paul Broussard had a big momentum stopper in the 2nd quarter wrestling the ball away from Scotlandville’s Hubbard and Kevin Henry forced a fumble that was recovered by Sean Parker to seal the victory, 26-25, with 2:40 left in the game.
