The Wildcats got off to a great start Friday night scoring 24 points in the first quarter, forcing district rival Zachary to try and play catch up the rest of the game. Central (5-1, 1-0) answered every Zachary (4-1, 0-1) score after en route to a 45-28 win.
A nearly flawless offensive performance for Central kept Zachary on their heels all night. Senior receiver Devon Gales gave Central their first score of the night on a 4 yard run set up by 17 and 28 yard Courville to Myer receptions. Senior quarterback Brett Courville had another great night going 10 for 20 for 232 yards including a 56 yard touchdown pass to Gary Triplett in the fourth quarter. Courville led Central on the ground with 120 yards and his own 52 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Myer led all receivers with 136 yards on 5 receptions. Senior running back Lamonte Juneau had scoring runs of eight and two yards.
Central’s offensive line did a great job of opening running lanes and protecting their quarterback, even though they were against a significantly bigger Zachary line.
Central’s kicking game is improving every week thanks to specialist Gregg Noel, who was perfect on PAT’s and had a 35 yard field goal in the first quarter. Noel eliminated Zachary’s return game by placing “sky kicks” perfectly at the sideline all night. Central recovered one of those kicks when Zachary failed to cover it.
Despite giving up quite a few pounds on the line, Central’s defense performed well as a unit. The defensive star of the game was safety Paul Broussard. Broussard had an interception and picked up a fumble running 87 yards for a touchdown. Coach Sid said Broussard’s fumble return was the play of the game. “They are so good on offense, and we’re pretty good too, but if you had to point to a play, that was it.”
