On a rain soaked field at “The Pit”, with an annoying cannon blasting with every touchdown and extra point, Central (3-1) lost to St. Amant (4-0) 21-12 last Friday.  Looking at the stat sheet you would swear the Cats won the game, outperforming the Gators in almost every statistical category including total offense (411 to 244), first downs (22 to 9) and time of possession.
Missed opportunities on offense and giving up big plays on defense were the order of the night for Central.  Having the ball inside the Gator’s five yard line on three different occasions and not getting a score was the biggest contributor to the loss.  Defensively, Central gave up 200 yards on the ground to St. Amant’s running back Trey Washington, including a 99 yard and a 54 yard touchdown run. On the positive side, Central moved the ball well in between the 20’s, amassing 237 yards passing and 174 yards on the ground.  The cats also had an impressive 80 yard scoring drive to start the third quarter.
After the game Coach Sid said, “We played a great football team and I think we’re a great football team, too.  We missed some opportunities.  I thought we moved the football extremely well at times.  I thought we played very well defensively.  When you are playing a team like this you can’t put it on the ground on back to back possessions.  You have to capitalize.   You get on the one yard line, you have to finish that.”
