PRESS RELEASE Central, LA — The new roundabout at Sullivan Rd and Gurney Rd is expected to be completed on Wednesday, September 19. Inspections will need to be made that day by the City-Parish before the roundabout can be opened to traffic.
Here are the rules for driving in a roundabout:
1. On the approach to a roundabout, you should start slowing down to 10 – 15 mph. Stay in your lane to the right of the splitter island. Be sure to look for bicyclists or pedestrians wanting to cross.
2. Then, move slowly to the YIELD line and look to your left. A YIELD sign will tell you to yield to traffic in the roundabout.
3. You may have to stop for cars approaching from your left. If the road is clear to your left, simply enter the roundabout turning right and go around the circle. You don’t have to stop if there are no cars approaching from your left. Traffic in the circle has the right-of-way.
4. Exit carefully to your right at the appropriate side street or driveway.
A modern roundabout is a type of intersection that has safety, operational, and aesthetic benefits for many different road users. Roundabouts are characterized by a central island; a circular roadway in which all vehicles travel counterclockwise; drivers entering the roundabout yield to traffic already in the roundabout; and design elements that cause drivers to use the roundabout at slow speeds. A concrete apron around the center circle is designed for large trucks to use when making the turn if necessary.
Think of a roundabout as a series of intersections where entering vehicles yield to one-way traffic coming from the left. A driver approaching a roundabout must slow down or stop for vehicles stopped ahead, and yield to traffic already in the roundabout. Once in the roundabout, the driver proceeds around the central island, then takes the necessary right-hand exit.
Roundabouts can improve safety by slower speeds and elimination of left turns; improve operations by smooth flowing traffic with less stop and go than a signalized intersection; and aesthetics are enhanced by landscaping and less pavement.
