CAPA Corner: Words of Encouragement From the Central Area Pastor’s Association

I have a hurricane story that has a good outcome, but I am not very proud of my part in it!  On Saturday night several weeks ago, I was at the church preparing for Sunday.  I received an automated computer call from Entergy telling us that they had scheduled a planned power outage for Blackwater Road on Sunday, the next day, from 9am – 1pm.  My immediate reaction was, “How can they do that?  We have church during that time! We can’t have church in the dark!” To be honest, I got a little mad!
I started an appeal process.  Is there any way you can postpone it or move it to another time?  We won’t have electricity for church.  They responded graciously, “Under normal conditions, we would consider your request, but these are storm conditions, and people are out of power!  If we postpone this planned power outage, it will postpone many others from having there power turned on!”
I was struck in my heart!  How selfish I had been!  Concerned with number one! Me and my church!  Not concerned about the needs of our community! Not living out what the Bible teaches!  If we have to shut the doors of the church for one Sunday so our neighbors can get their power back more quickly, Praise God!  If we have to sacrifice a little so that our community can flourish and prosper, Praise God!  Maybe that spirit of sacrificing for another person’s good is what is missing in our world today!
Thank you, Entergy and DEMCO, for working so hard to restore power to our community.  We appreciate you! Thank you Lord, for letting me see the selfishness in my heart!  Thanks for your forgiveness!
