Last Sunday the Art League of Central held the reception for its August exhibit "Celebrating the Louisiana Bicentennial", now being shown at the Joor Road branch of the public library. This show is a first for the League, in that it is its very first juried exhibit. Judged by Denham Springs artist Bonnie Williams, the show boasts a variety of media and subject matter.
Awards were given out at the reception, with several first time ribbon winners being honored. In the "Under Glass" category, First Place was awarded to Derrel Robinson for his work entitled "NoLa Katrina". Second Place was given to Gwin Brister for his work "Sweet Memories". Third Place went to Beth Fussell for her photography dyptich entitled "The Changing of the Leaves". Honorable Mention went to Mia Freneaux for "Early Morning Wax Road".
In the "Not Under Glass" category, First Place was won by Andrea
Phillips for her oil "The Rosedown Fountain". Second Place was awarded
to Margaret Shipley for her work "Great Blue". Third Place went to Pat
Saucier for "Atchafalaya Swamp Basin". Honorable Mention was given to Karen McCormick for "Artist's Cottage", and to Charlene Schlatre for
"Blooming Rose".
Holding a juried show was one of many of the ALC's goals, and more are in the works. A show entitled "Something Red" will be exhibited at the Greenwell Springs library in November. "Celebrating the Louisiana Bicentennial" will be shown until the end of August.
