Monday morning East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Captain Bobby Dale Callender returned to Central and assumed his duties as the Commander of the Sheriff’s Substation on Gurney Road. Captain Callender replaces Captain Don Strickland who served Central well during his tenure as Commander. The new Captain refers to himself as “just an old street cop”, but his career in law enforcement tells the story of an experienced veteran at all levels of the job. Captain Callender shared that he “is blessed to be returning to the Central Substation” and added “I worked at this Substation under the command of my Uncle, Captain Mack White, so this is coming full circle for me…like a homecoming. I have been given an opportunity beyond measure at this time in my career by GOD and Sheriff Sid Gautreaux to serve the City of Central.”
According to the EBRSO, the Captain began his career in law enforcement with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office in the 1970s. His law enforcement expertise comes from working in detectives, uniform patrol, felony action, armed robbery and burglary, community policing, metro and narcotics divisions. He also worked in the jail. He left the office as a shift Lieutenant after more than a decade of service and took a position as the Chief Investigator at the Parish Attorney’s Office. While there he served as the Director of Gaming Enforcement, Director of Alcohol and Beverage Control and Director of Investigations.
“I’ve spent my whole life in Central,” Callender said. “I grew up here; I’ve raised my children here; and some of my grandchildren are here. This is a special area made up of people with a strong sense of community. I couldn’t be more honored to serve the people of this city.” Callender has been married to his wife Rochet Callender for twenty years, has three children and six grandchildren. He is a member of Greenwell Springs Baptist Church.
