Mrs. Henderson taught me to read. Miss Buffington (who also taught my Dad when he was a boy) taught me multiplication and division. Mrs. Bowen drilled grammar into me. Mr. Hough gave me a curiosity about all things of science. Coach Carter challenged me in physical discipline. From Miss Owen I learned how to write a research paper. Mr Grigg passed on to me the mechanical skills to overhaul automotive engines. Among countless things, Dr MeGee equipped me with specialized skills to interpret a written text according to the author’s original meaning. Dr Rosdahl changed history from facts and numbers to people, relationships, and decisions.
This article is a shout-out to teachers and educators – whether public school, private school, homeschool, Sunday School, college or corporate trainers. As a pastor I did not choose my vocation, rather I was chosen for it. And it seems that the best teachers can say something much the same – it’s more a calling than a career.
So to all the teachers of our Central community — thanks for what you do. You may deal with ungrateful children at times, unhappy adults in the moment, skimp by with inadequate resources, and have to complete more forms than is humanly possible. But you are affecting lives for decades to come. As a local community and a society at large we are grateful for you.
Proverbs 9:10. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (NIV)
