Central High School football coach and local legend Sid Edwards received some much deserved recognition on the state-wide level last week. In “Louisiana Sports Legends and Heroes—Leaving a Legacy,” a book recently published by BIC Media Solutions, Edwards was one of the athletes and coaches honored for not just his work on the field of play, but also within his local community.
A ceremony took place July 19 at the Lod Cook Alumni Center on Louisiana State University’s campus. Edwards was in attendance along with numerous other honorees, including former LSU baseball coach Skip Bertman; former LSU running back Billy Cannon; Olympic weightlifting coach Gayle Hatch; former LSU wide receiver Eddie Kennison; former LSU football players Gus, Brian and Todd Kinchen; and former LSU football player Ruffin Rodrigue.
Edwards’ coaching accomplishments began at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, where he had the opportunity to mentor former Florida State University and NFL running back Warrick Dunn. His first varsity head coaching job came in 1997 at Redemptorist High School where the team won back-to-back state championships in 2002 and 2003.
After a two-year excursion at Menard High School in Alexandria and Jesuit High School in New Orleans, where he spent one year each, Edwards accepted the head coaching job at Central High School. His first stint as head coach with the Wildcats stretched from 2007-2009 where he was an impressive 30-7 and won two district championships. Following the 2009 season, Edwards stepped down to become athletic director for the City of Central School System. But Edwards’ passion for the game was too strong to stay away. He will return to the sidelines to lead the Wildcats again this fall.
He has also been a community activist for many organizations. As coach of Central, Edwards had his football team wear pink bracelets for a Pink Game to support breast cancer awareness. His basketball team had pink uniforms as its promotion of the cause. He is also active with the Autism Society of Greater Baton Rouge.
