If Tony awards were given for pure enthusiasm, the whole cast of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” would be eligible. The award winning Central Community Theatre is presenting this energetic musical for their summer offering at the Manship Theatre at the Shaw Center for the Arts. The cast of 42 young people, aged 12-26, have been practicing since June 10 for this very demanding play. They must be accomplished actors, singers, and tap dancers to pull “Millie” off successfully. “We have incredibly talented people in the cast this year,” Director Karen Clinkingbeard enthused, “I’m very excited. We have excellent vocalists, actors, it’s going to be a great show!” “Millie”, which will feature live accompaniment, is co-directed by Kim Sullivan and Claire Clinkingbeard. The fast paced choreography was created by Claire, Addie Dean, and Sarah Talbot, who also performs the lead role. This writer had the privilege of watching the cast perform the show-stopping “Forget About the Boy” and “Only in New York” and folks, they are WONDERFUL. These young people dance with verve and sing with commitment and most of all, obviously love every minute of what they’re doing.
Contact the Manship Theatre at manshiptheatre.org to purchase tickets. “Thoroughly Modern Milllie” will run from August 2 through August 5. As an added treat, Central will have the chance to see some of the songs and dances performed on Thursday July 26 at 7:00 pm at Central Perk during the Central Cultural Foundation’s “Celebrate the Arts” series. Come out and catch the excitement!
