The Monthly Membership meeting of the City of Central Chamber of Commerce was held on Wednesday, July 11.  Our special guest speaker was Jim Patterson Vice President of Governmental Relations, as well as Employee Relations Council Director, for Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI).  Patterson, in his presentation, discussed the efforts that LABI had put forth, during the 2012 legislative session, in order to help pass legislation aimed at improving Louisiana’s business and economic appeal.  For many of our members this was their first introduction to LABI.

So who is LABI and what is their focus?  LABI is the state chamber of commerce and state manufacturer association that serves as a large and effective business lobbying group in Louisiana.  Formed over thirty years ago by business leaders from all over the state, LABI has unified the state's business community into a strong, professionally-staffed organization. A proven force in Louisiana government, LABI now speaks for business and industry, not only during legislative sessions, but also year-round.

Each year, many groups attempt to persuade the Louisiana Legislature to enact laws that favor their special interests, and their best interest is often directly opposed to the best interest of businesses in the state. Most companies cannot afford to spend the time or money to hire the personnel necessary to keep up with the many issues that affect their business income and then successfully lobby their position to state government. Joining LABI gives businesses the opportunity to unite with their peers from around the state to accomplish their objectives with much less expense.

The City of Central Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a part of LABI.  This allows us to stay informed on issues that would affect the businesses in our area, help safe guard our business interests, and better serve the Central Chamber’s members.  If you are interested in finding out more about LABI, you can find a link on our website’s Homepage.  Just go to www.cityofcentralchamber.com and click on the LABI icon.
