Upcoming Free Children’s Events at the Library

    The Greenwell Spring and Central Branch Libraries are hosting a myriad of fun events for your children this summer! Here are the next month's activities:

Central Branch Library

Toddlertime Storytime
Wed. July 11 & 18 @ 10 AM
For children from walking through 2 years old accompanied by an adult.  Sessions are very informal and include short books, simple rhymes, songs, and fingerplays.  Sessions last 20 – 25 minutes.

Preschool Storytime
Wed. July 11 & 18 @ 10:30 AM
For children about 3 – 5 years old.  Children may attend without an adult, though adults must stay in the library.  Sessions last 30 minutes.  Storytimes are meant to be fun and non-stressful for children. Because children’s chronological ages do not always coincide with their emotional ages, children may elect to be in a younger or older class.  Simply talk with one of our library staff.

Nighty-Night Storytime and Craft
Tuesday, July 3 @ 6:30 PM
Children are invited to listen to a special nighty-night storytime and make a moon and stars wreath.  Ages 2 & up.  About 30—45 minutes.

Let’s Learn about Fire Safety!
Thursday, July 5 @ 10 AM
Captain Derek Glover of the Central Fire Department will teach us about fire safety. Ages 4 and up. About 45
minutes.

Ladybug Girl Storycraft
Saturday, July 7 @ 3 PM
Join us for a special reading of David Soman’s Ladybug Girl  and a ladybug craft based on the story! Ages 4—8.  About 30 minutes.

PLAYMAKERS OF BATON ROUGE
Tuesday. July 10 @ 2 PM
In Lucky Lacowski’s Really Big Dream, Luke Lacowski has the WORST luck. Seems like he's always getting in to trouble for something someone else does.  Certain he is jinxed, he locks himself  in his room with a pile of his favorite books. After an adventurous and exciting night with Hip Hop Dream Cloud, he wakes up refreshed and hopeful he can finally turn his luck around. Ages 4 & up.

TOYS & GAMES FROM THE PAST
Thursday, July 12 @ 10 AM
John O'Neill from the Centenary State Historic Site will present and discuss children's games from the past.  Ages 5 & up.  About 45 minutes.

Board Games
Saturday, July 14 @11 AM
Love board games? Come to the library and play Jenga, Uno, and Checkers with us!  Bring a friend to add to the competition! Ages 8—11. About 60 minutes.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? Storycraft
Tuesday, July 17 @ 10:30 AM
Come to the library when we read Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. and make brown bear stick puppets!  Ages 2 & up.  About 30 minutes.

TRI-PARISH BALLET presents SLEEPING BEAUTY

Tri-Parish Ballet’s young dancers return to present the timeless fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty.  This ballet is sure to both delight and enchant our audience. Ages 3 & up.

JACOB LANGSTON’S Tae Kwon Do Demonstration
Thursday, July 19 @ 10 AM
Join us when area Tae Kwon Do expert Jacob Langston and his Tae Kwon Do students demonstrate some basics of Tae Kwon Do. Ages 5 & up.

SUMMER READING PARTY
Monday, July 23 @ 10 AM
Games!  Spacewalk!  Clowns!  Prizes!  Refreshments! Face Painting!  Tons of FUN to celebrate the end of Summer!  Come and join us!  Everyone is invited!  For ages 3 & up. 8 & under must have an adult.  Groups are required to register.

GAME DAY, LUNCH, & A MOVIE
Monday, July 2 @ 10:30 AM
It’s going to be fun!  Children will have a game day including checkers, puzzles, UNO, Jump rope, hop scotch,  board games and BINGO!  Following the games we will all come together and have a cool down session while we watch Weston Woods movies.  Children must bring their own bagged lunches.  Ages 5 & up.

COMBINED STORYTIME

Children, ages 3 and up, are invited to participate in the fun-filled, Dream Big…Read!  Storytime.  We will have a story for everyone regardless of age.

GREENWELL SPRINGS LIBRARY CHILDREN’S BOOK CLUB
Thursday, July 5 @ 2:30 PM.
Children will discuss books they have recently read.  Together the children will create visuals relevant to their stories.  They will alternate turns reading a fun story, then choose books for their next meeting in two weeks.  Ages 7-11.

PAJAMA STORYTIME
Thursday, July 5 @ 7:00 PM
Children, ages 3 and up, are invited to participate in Pajama Storytime.  We will have a story for everyone regardless of age.

KOOL SMILES GENERAL DENTISTRY FOR KIDS & PARENTS
Monday, July 9 @ 10:30 AM
Cheese your biggest smile!   Gwendolyn Battiste, hygienist (and “tooth fairy”) from Kool Smiles, will speak to children about keeping their pearly whites healthy and clean.  Ages 3 & up.

PAPER PLATE RACCOON STORYCRAFT

Children will enjoy making this adorable raccoon craft and then hear more about our nighttime creature from the Sarah Raccoon story Ready for Anything! By Keiko Kasza.  Ages 6 & up.

DREAM BIG READ!  WITH MARY JO KELLY, THE BOOK DOCTOR

Mary Jo Kelly, local librarian will entertain us with dreamy tales and stories.  Come and experience a delightful hour of storytelling.  Ages 3 & up.  About 45 minutes.

COMBINED STORYTIME

Children, ages 3 and up, are invited to participate in the fun-filled, Dream Big…Read!  Storytime.  We will have a story for everyone regardless of age.

HIGHLAND ROAD OBSERVATORY
Tuesday, July 17 @ 2:30 PM
Visitors from the Highland Road Observatory return with a variety of physical science experiments of interest for children and their families.  UV bracelets, hematite magnets and the armatron are back, with a few new surprises this summer!  Ages 6 & up.  About 2 hours.

PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE FLOWER
Wednesday, July 18 @ 2 PM
Looking for a way to recycle your old plastic water bottles,?  Well look no further!  Children will turn ordinary plastic water bottles into works of flower art and then learn more about living green from the book Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle by Cecilia Minden.  Ages 5 & up.  This program is supported in part by a Decentralized Arts Funding Grant from the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge in cooperation with the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, and Louisiana State Arts Council.
