In Memoriam: June Dixie Owens

    “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28. June Dixie Owens, 93, a loving and devoted wife, daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Sunday, May 13th, 2012. She was born in Lincoln, NE, June 3, 1918 to Lester and Theresa Stallings Hawkins. June graduated from Havelock High School in Lincoln, NE. On May 17th, 1936, June married Raymond Lloyd Owens, to whom she was married for over 65 years. They resided in North Platte, NE. June moved to Baton Rouge to be near her family after the passing of her husband in 2001. Mrs. Owens worked in numerous health care settings as a care giver and served as the first home health aid in Grand Island, NE. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Andrew Chapter 41. June served as Worthy Matron, an accomplishment that she cherished. June’s first love was in serving her church, First Christian Church in North Platte, NE. She led numerous Sunday school classes and organized the funeral luncheon ministry. June blessed many people with her wonderful food and comforting words. She loved sports and was a faithful fan to all LSU sports, Saints, Cubs, Hornets, and Huskers. She spent most of her recent years reading and cheering on her favorite teams. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Tom Lacy of Baton Rouge; seven grandchildren, Mike Sanford, Larry (Penny) Sanford, Mark Owens, Paul (Sharon) Lacy, Nichol (Paul) Bejeaux, Kristen (Derek) Glover, and TJ (Terri) Lacy; twelve great-grandchildren; Stephanie, Jason, Jacob, Nick, Josh, Bryce, Brandt, Scott, Ryan, Evan, and Emmarie; two great-great grandchildren; Breckin, and Axton. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Raymond; two sons, Ronald and Raymond; a grandson, Scott Owens; a sister, Nellye Knight; and parents, Lester and Theresa Hawkins. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, May 17, at Live Oak United Methodist Church in Watson, LA. Service to be performed by Brother Mark Crosby. The family would like to thank Dr. Herschel Dean, Dr. Joe Cefalu; her caregivers, Ms. Estelle, Shiela, Anna; and her hospice nurse, Brandi for the loving care they gave our precious GiGi. Special thanks to Deacon Phil Bejeaux for the comforting pastoral care in her final hours. We wish to thank our Central Fire Department and EMS for all the caring and special help given.
