Nuclear Labs at CIS-Baton Rouge & CIS-Lafayette General Now Accredited by ICANL

Nuclear laboratories at Cardiovascular Institute of the South in Baton Rouge and Lafayette General are now accredited for the next three years by the Intersocietal Committee for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL).

These two laboratories join eight other CIS nuclear laboratories in being recognized for commitment to high-quality patient care and the provisions of quality diagnostic testing.

As heart disease remains the number one killer in the United States, early detection through nuclear testing is even more crucial to fighting the condition.  Nuclear procedures assess cardiac function and flow to the heart.  As a result, physicians are able to detect the presence of cardiovascular disease and determine risk for future heart attacks. 

An accurate diagnosis based on nuclear cardiology testing relies on the skill of the nuclear technologist performing the examination, the type of equipment used, the knowledge and experience of the physician and quality assurance measures.

ICANL accreditation is widely respected within the medical community, as illustrated by the support of the national medical societies related to nuclear medicine, which include physicians, nuclear medicine technologists, and medical physicists.  Patients should remain vigilant in making sure that their nuclear medicine procedures are performed within accredited laboratories, because for many facilities, it remains a voluntary process.
