Denham Springs (3-0) took early command of the 5A District Varsity Bowling standings by defeating Central (0-3) on Monday (1-30-12) afternoon, 17-10. It was by far the best overall performance as a team for the Wildcats in the early season, but in the end, Denham Springs continued their winning ways over Central’s bowling program.
Central got off to a slow start in Game 1 by falling behind 1-7 and losing Total Pins, 806-881. Jacob Garretson (Freshman) and Bryan Waites (Junior) were the high bowlers for Central in Game 1 with a 181 and 176 respectively.
Game 2 was a completely different story. The Wildcats clawed their way back into the match by bowling an 861 series to Denham Spring’s 818 and winning 6 of the 8 points. Kevin Kennedy (Sophomore) helped spark the comeback by throwing a season high 172 and Garretson rolled a very nice 223. Going into Game 3, Central trimmed Denham’s lead to 9-7 and Total Pins lead to 32 pins.
The Wildcats started off strong in Game 3, but Central slowly fell behind Denham and ultimately lost Game 3, 2-6 and 823-935. Sean Murphy (Sophomore) lead the Wildcats in Game 3 with a 177, followed by Waites with a 170 and Kennedy’s 165.
In the end, Central lost the match 10-17 and Total Pins 2490-2634. Denham Springs was led by their talented anchor Mason Zetsch (536 series, 187 high game). Central had a balanced attack from Kennedy (465, 172), Murphy (462, 177), Waites (478, 176) and Garretson (562, 223). Garretson currently leads the Wildcats in average with a 199.
Central will get another shot at derailing the Yellow Jackets on February 16th, but up next is Catholic High (2-0) this Thursday (2-2-12) at Circle Bowl. Central has never defeated Catholic and this group of Wildcats is looking forward to ending that dominance.
