School Funding Options – Advantages of Property Taxes

Propositions two and three on next Saturday’s ballot are funded via property taxes. Here are two advantages of property taxes over additional sales taxes:

Homes owned and occupied by senior citizens and disabled veterans may qualify for “freeze forms,” provided by the Parish Assessor’s Office, which do not allow the assessed value of the homes to increase with market changes.

As the debt is paid and assessed property values improve within the district, the millages required to pay the general obligation will decrease, thereby reducing the taxpayer burden each year.
