Live Well: Color in Motion

By  |

Hello again,

My daddy told me when something that’s wildly popular goes out of style, don’t be surprised if it makes a comeback down the line.  If you were around in the 70’s you remember how big running was then. Well, guess what.  It’s back!  Only today’s runners expect something more from this time honored form of aerobic exercise.  They want it to be FUN too!  Organizations like “Color in Motion” have a simple recipe. Like all good Louisiana recipes it starts with a roux.  In this case, it’s a charity-based 5K race. We’re having one in Central June 29th.  Add volunteers to throw packets of colored powder on runners as they pass and you’ve created more than just another competitive opportunity for runners. You’ve whipped up a running event that’s a gumbo color and fun for everyone.  Go to http://colorinmotion5k.com/Baton_Rouge and, click on “Gallery” you’ll see what I mean.  I know the web address has Baton Rouge in it, but trust me this is a Central event.

So what’s all this got to do with living well?  Good question!  In all my years of doing medical reports on TV, I can’t tell you how many times I heard people talk about the need to live healthy “body, mind and spirit”.  In other words, a person’s health isn’t limited to just our physical needs. It’s about the “whole” body.  I see that principle at work with the Color in Motion 5K and other “themed” or “fun” fitness events like the Warrior Dash or Foam Fest Run.  Sure, it’s competition.  But, the lighthearted atmosphere organizers create feeds both body and soul.

I’m proud to part of the local committee working to make this event a reality.  I’m excited Helen Balzli and the team at Central Physical Therapy saw the value in becoming a Platinum co-sponsor for an event that promises to attract as many as 3,000 plus people from all over the region. Because Central Community Schools is hosting the race, the event will start and end at the new Central Intermediate/Middle School showcasing one of the crown jewels of the community.  A portion of the money raised will go toward building a beautiful, walking/bike path around the campus that will eventually be lined with outdoor classrooms.

I think the Color in Motion 5K is going to be a healthy event for Central on a lot of different levels. I hope you’ll sign-up to run.  Just go to http://colorinmotion5k.com/Baton_Rouge .     You’ll see where to register. Type “Central” in the “Promo Code” box and get a discount on your tickets.
